About
Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion
is an established and time-tested method of reducing
or removing facial wrinkles. It is particularly
effective in the upper lip lines, but may also be
used to good effect in the peri-oral area ( an oval
area extending from the nose to the lower edge of
the chin). It is often performed at the same time
as face lift surgery since face lift by itself does
not improve peri-oral wrinkling.

During
dermabrasion surgery, a rotating abrasive diamond-impregnated
burr ( similar to a mini-sander) is used to remove
the outermost layers of damaged skin. Dr. Davidson
controls how much will be removed and determines
how deeply to penetrate the skin depending upon
the degree of wrinkling or scarring. This abrasive
action evens out the skin, and a new layer of smoother
skin forms within 7 - 10 days.

Most
people are "presentable", with makeup
at this time. The new skin surface is initially
pink or red and typically requires 6-8 weeks for
this color to fade.
Many
experienced plastic surgeons who have compared this
type of dermabrasion with laser resurfacing have
concluded that dermabrasion produces better results
and faster healing with less risk of pigmentary
changes than with the laser.
Surgical
dermabrasion with a diamond burr should not be confused
with microdermabrasion, which often produces little
or no permanent improvement.
About
Chemical Peel
Another
method of reducing facial wrinkles is the appication
of one or several chemical solutions to the skin
surface.

Light
Peels - ( lunch hour peels, using "fruit
acids") have rapid healing and give the skin
a temporary glow. Because the improvement is slight
or minimal, Dr. Davidson does not perform this procedure.
Medium
Peels - often Trichloracetic acid (TCA) or reduced
croton oil phenol peels are often very helpful to
treat sun damaged skin to help even out skin color
and remove blemishes and fine lines. Dr. Davidson
performs these peels often. The depth of the peel
can be modified by changing the concentration of
TCA in a TCA peel and by changing the proportions
of croton oil and phenol if this product is used.
Deep
Peels - ( higher concentrations of the phenol
and croton oil mixture ) are reserved for people
who have advanced wrinkling. Healing is slower but
the results can be dramatic. Deeper peels require
longer healing time and have a greater risk of making
the skin lighter in color ( hypo pigmentation ).
If hypo pigmentation is observed most women find
that they can conceal this with make up, although
make up could not conceal the wrinkling, which was
formerly the main problem.
At
your consultation visit, Dr. Davidson will tell
you if he considers you a good candidate for chemical
peel or dermabrasion.
