Many
people feel self-conscious about the shape or appearance
of their ears. Children may be subject to teasing
or ridicule, and adults may find that their hair
styling options are limited. Thus correction of
protruding ears ( otoplasty ) is frequently done
for women, men, and children over the age of five.
The procedure may be performed under either local
or general anesthesia on an outpatient basis.

The
contour of the ear cartilage is altered through
a concealed incision, improving the shape and position
of the ears. The procedure takes about an hour.
After surgery, a protective dressing remains in
place for one or two days. Thereafter the hair may
be washed and a ski band worn only at night to protect
the ears.
