To
reduce bruising and bleeding, it is important to
avoid all over the counter pain medications except
Tylenol (Acetominophen). Aspirin, Advil, Aleve,
Nuprin and other pain medications will interfere
with the normal clotting and should be avoided for
two weeks before and after surgery.
Also,
avoid vitamin E ( which keeps your platelets from
clumping together ) and all herbal products ( especially
gingko biloba and ginseng) which may greatly increase
bleeding. Same for fish oil capsules. You do not
have to worry about Vit E or other ingredients in
your food.
Restrict
alcohol consumption to one glass of wine or beer
per day. Larger volumes may affect the liver, which
manufactures products your body needs for blood
clotting. If you have experienced problems with
abnormal bleeding with prior surgery, dental work
or menstrual cycles, notify our office promptly.
Absolutely no recreational drugs are permitted.
You
may take your usual medications for the treatment
of depression, GI problems and high blood pressure
until the evening before surgery. After midnight,
no food or drink.
If
you are having face lift surgery, you may color
your hair a few days before surgery. You will not
be able to color it for four weeks after surgery.
Leave hair long for better concealment. Do not wear
any makeup on the day of surgery.
If
you are a woman having breast surgery, shave underarms
the day before surgery and wash entire chest with
the soap of your choice. If you experience a lot
of breast engorgement/discomfort pre menstrually,
try to schedule the surgery one to two weeks after
your period ( mid cycle).
If
you are having liposuction, shower or bathe daily
a week before surgery. Shave legs day before surgery.
If
you are having general anesthesia, you MUST have
another adult available to drive you home when you
are discharged. Taxi's are NOT acceptable since
you do not know the driver and they are not authorized
to see you into your home or apartment.
You
may NOT drive yourself home if you have had general
anesthesia or sedation.
